DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham community is mourning the loss of Liliana Concha Perez, described by loved ones as a cherished real estate agent and friend.

Perez was discovered dead Tuesday around midnight in her office building alongside a man her family said was her former boyfriend.

Both Perez and the man had gunshot wounds. According to police, the man shot himself.

Perez leaves behind two children, a grandchild and a community that deeply cared for her.

"She was fun. She loved to laugh," said Mauricio Concha Perez, Liliana's younger brother.

Through her real estate agency, the 55-year-old made a significant mark on Durham, helping countless Latinx immigrants navigate the path to homeownership.

"It's about helping people make their dreams come true, and she did that with a lot of people," Mauricio said.

Perez was found dead in the real estate office building where her family said she changed countless lives.

"A part of my soul died on Tuesday," Mauricio said. "She was everything to me."

Mauricio said the man was his sister's business partner and former boyfriend.

"I knew he was very jealous, possessive and obsessive," Mauricio said.

WRAL News reached out to police to confirm the circumstances surrounding the deaths. However, investigators did not have additional details to release.

Mauricio is now mourning the loss of his sister while waiting for any answers.

"She agreed to go out with him. And then she never came back," Mauricio said.

The victim's family has asked the U.S. government to expedite her mother's humanitarian visa application.

Perez's mother is currently in Colombia, and unless she gets that visa, she won't be able to attend her own daughter's funeral.

Durham police are handling the investigation. They are not seeking suspects and said there's no threat to the public.
