MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.C. — Attorneys for James Dunmore, who is charged with killing his girlfriend, Allisha Watts, last summer, on Monday asked a judge to lower his bond.
In October, a Montgomery County judge gave Dunmore a $1 million bond weeks after Watts' body was found in a wooded area.

Dunmore, who is being held in the Montgomery County jail, was not in court on Monday as his attorneys pushed for a lower bond.

Defense attorneys also asked the judge to expedite Dunmore's case. The judge agreed and set a 45-day window for the state to share information.

Additionally, Dunmore's attorneys asked for more evidence, including evidence showing how Watts died, but state prosecutors said they had no information to share.

Montgomery County's district attorney has said they will not seek the death penalty, meaning Dunmore could face life in prison without parole if convicted.

After the hearing, Watts' family and friends said they were thankful the judge agreed to expedite this process.

In attendance was Artee Bruton, Dunmore’s wife since 2021, who did not want to appear on camera but reiterated she was abused by Dunmore and sought help from police just months before Watts was found dead.

Dunmore's wife told reporters she is hoping for a guilty verdict, saying she is worried Dunmore would hurt her if released from prison.

Watts, who was 39 when she died, was last seen alive on July 16, when Moore County detectives said that Dunmore and Watts went to the mall but never returned home.

Two days later, authorities found Dunmore found unresponsive in Watts' SUV in the parking lot of the DMV office in Polkton – a lot frequented by troopers filling up their vehicles with gas. A detective said he overdosed on blood pressure medication.

Dunmore was unresponsive when he was taken to the ICU in Union County.

Watts' body was found in August more than one month after she went missing. In September, the court found probable cause that Dunmore murdered Watts on or around July 18.
