Hundreds of Cary residents were lined up in the aisles of Ashworth Drugs on Wednesday as the store temporarily reopened its doors after announcing its closure earlier this month.

With barely any room to stand, generations of locals made a run for the shelves to purchase a piece of Ashworth's history or for a final opportunity to sit down at the fountain for a famous hot dog and an ice cold orangeade.

Many stood in line for over an hour to take a tangible memory home. Some spoke with WRAL News to share fond memories of Ashworth's.

"I'm a Cary native, who graduated from Cary High School in 1968," said Gail Queen. "This was a great place for everyone to come after school and enjoy Cherry Cokes, hot dogs and just a good time."

She shared her love for owners Ralph and Daphne Ashworth, saying, "They are like Mr. and Ms. Cary. We miss [Daphne]. We wish she could be here to share in this love and support the community is giving."

In a way, Wednesday was just like any other day: The fountain was buzzing with community members, chatting and sharing memories. Al was behind the fountain, busily grilling up hot dogs. Ralph was walking around the store, smiling and chatting with customers.

"I've been coming here since I was born. I went to preschool at First Baptist Cary, and after preschool we'd walk down here for a hot dog or a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch," said Whitney Lanier, standing in line for her chance to buy a memory.

Another woman, standing in line with an armful of merchandise, said, "So much has changed, and everything has its season. I'm thankful for the years of memories," said one woman, who has shared Ashworth's with her grandchildren.
