MORRISVILLE, N.C. — An American Airlines plane that took off from Raleigh-Durham Airport on Monday morning had to turn around and return to the airport less than an hour later due to a mechanical issue.

According to a spokesperson for the airline, there was an indication of an issue with the cargo door, and they returned to the airport out of an abundance of caution.

"The cargo door was fine," said spokesperson Tim Wetzel. "The problem was that the light was not functioning."

The landing was not considered an emergency landing, as no emergency was declared. It was a normal landing.

According to FlightAware, the plane took off at 6:34 a.m. and returned around 35 minutes later.

"We are working to get that fixed and flight back on its way," said Wetzel.
