RALEIGH, N.C. — A driver has been charged after a man was hit and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 40 in Raleigh Friday night.

According to authorities, David Crooms, 41, was driving a 2019 Dodge Charger eastbound on I- 40 when his passenger, Jacoby Oliver, 22, exited the moving vehicle.

Another vehicle in the eastbound lanes, a 2008 Toyota RAV4, hit Oliver, who was lying in the roadway.

The RAV4 then collided with the guardrail and another vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder.

Oliver died from his injuries. Crooms was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

The crash caused two of five lanes on I-40 to be closed near Wade Ave. before Exit 289.

The case remains under investigation.
