1. Explore Pullen Park

Pullen Park is an urban oasis only 2 miles west of downtown Raleigh. You can reach it by public transport or a 40-minute stroll.

The area first opened to the public in March 1887 and was the first public park in the state. In the 66-acre garden, you'll find calming bodies of water and leafy walkways covered by trees. The park comes to life in the fall when nature turns into a sea of red and brown.

Those young at heart will be glad to find the amusement rides. You can float down the river in a peddle boat or feel like a child again on the carousel. And all before your daily dose of caffeine in the onsite cafe.

2. Seek Treasures in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

There's no doubt about it. The Museum of Natural Sciences is one of the best free attractions in North Carolina. If you're traveling on a budget, this museum should be at the top of your to-do list.

The museum is located in the downtown area and housed inside one of the city's standout buildings. Once you admire the exterior, walk via its welcoming doors and admire the interior.

3. Uncover the Historic Yates Mill County Park

Historic Yates Mill County Park is only five miles south of the city center. Yet it feels like a different world from the bustling streets of Raleigh.

As of 2022, the iconic Yates Mills is the only water-powered gristmill still in use in Wake County. It's listed in the National Register of Historic Places and welcomes over 100,000 people.

The breathtaking surroundings make it the perfect day out with friends or family. Once you hike along the boardwalk, you can relax to the sound of birds chirping with a picnic.

4. Admire Exhibits at The North Carolina Museum of Art

You can't say you've visited Miami if you didn't go to a white sandy beach.

Well, you also can't say you've visited Raleigh without taking a trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art.

The gallery first opened its doors in 1956. The state spent $1 million on 158 paintings, two sculptures, and 25 pieces of furniture.

Since then, the museum has blossomed into life. Today, you can find Renaissance, Egyptian, Greek, American, African and Jewish ornaments inside its walls.

5. Walk Through Nature at William B. Umstead State Park

North Carolina is the motherland of 34 state parks. And William B. Umstead is arguably the prettiest of the bunch.

7. Visit Marbles Kids Museum

The Marbles Kids Museum is one of the top-rated attractions for children. With its interactive and fun educational exhibits, it's no surprise those with younger families love coming here!

Kids are encouraged to play, have fun and play with marbles. But it's also academic. Kids learn Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, while having a blast.

The museum is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm, except for Thursday, when it stays open until 7 pm.

8. Discover JC Raulston Arboretum

JC Raulston Arboretum might only have 10 acres of land, but it certainly packs a punch.

This famous spot for weddings is a few minutes walk from the beating heart of Raleigh. It's the perfect place to recharge in the shade on a summer's day during your sightseeing tour. You'll find many locals doing the same.

9. Take In Downtown Raleigh

Last but not least is CAM Raleigh. A contemporary art gallery, a stone's throw away from Raleigh Union Train Station.

CAM is a unique museum and different from most. It consists of temporary exhibits and no permanent ones.

The displays are the work of artists with regional, national, and international recognition.

The museum is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until 5 pm. There is no entrance fee but check in advance for special events and programs while you're in town.

Note: The museum is currently closed but will reopen on Oct. 11.
