Vets to Drones prepares veterans for drone industry 

The Veterans Day commemoration in Fayetteville was shifted by rain, but the sentiment remains.

Wednesday. So, but Don Tower, he is not a newcomer to family, many of you know him in various ways. His resume is detailed and Covers at least two pages. So I'm not gonna go there. Um he started the veterans parade again about 12 years ago. And uh, but we zeroed in on the fact that Dawn not single handedly, but he was able to secure the property for the Freedom Memorial part, get the funds and grants designed it and what you see now is a result many, many hours of hard work. What's up? And I'm gonna ask our Regent D. A. R. R. D. A. R. Regent molly done and live Wilson and parc de biere. He was one of the community people that wrote the ladder and also Tony savan. That Tony could not be here today. So molly if he would pin no penny. Uh and the certificate reads the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Certificate of Award presented on in over your 11 2022 for excellence in community service. Don Tower, signed by chapter Regent molly Don and the National Chair Michelle wear. Thank you Don, thank you all for being here and we're just so proud to have to be able to give this community service award. It's the very first time from our chapter uh the colonel robert Rowe and er that we've ever given this award before the very first and we've given it to Don in recognition of his efforts, your efforts for so long to uplift the other people in our community through your dedication, your perseverance, your generosity of spirit. That is what has made all the difference here and we appreciate your valuable contribution to this community so much and we just wish you well as you continue in your liver. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Just a little bit about the Blue Star Memorial. Many of you may not know that. Um, The first event started in 1944 in New Jersey. Uh, the garden club in New Jersey planted 1000 dogwood trees in an area and that was to be a living tribute to the veterans. Uh, they wanted some way to recognize the veterans after World War two. No deal boards could go in that area. That was a living tribute. Our National Garden Club in 1944, started the Blue Storm Blue Star Memorial Highway um, markers. Um, these markers have to be on certain, it has to be approved and it has to be on certain areas. Um, the Cross Great Garden Club Dedicated the marker on March three, At that time it was on Highway 301. Well alone came on 95 and somehow it got shoved into a ditch covered with your breath When it was recovered one of our members Lane Nunnery a lion pool nunnery was um very persistent that we put it on Hay Street and got the approval to do that. Ordinarily it would never be approved to go in Hey Street because it is not a memorial highway north Carolina D. O. T. Website. There are 35 blue star highway um, markers closest here would be sliders corner and clinton. There is a highway marker which is at a park and done. But there are 19 in rest areas and visitor centers. So this marker has been in for a long time and the Cross Street club was started in 1937. So now on to our program. Um, I would be remiss if I did not recognize one of our D. A. R. Members that's here from indiana bob chapman and her husband dan, who is a member of the S. A. R. Uh, this is a front time bomb has ever been able to be two at a meeting and she is the mother in law of my daughter Andrea town. Okay. I call on three stars. Colors today are presented by the independent light Infantry Company. The oldest military unit in continuous existence in the south organized under George Washington's administration. It fought in all the nation's wars through World War One. Thereafter, it was designated a historic military command and asset of the State Adjutant General. Color Officer. Advanced the colors guard. Hello for work. Hello girls. Post colors four. First tell us perche. Thanks posted, Tie the color guard 7 to recall forward. Ladies and gentlemen and blue of our ordinary chaplain. I am offering the implication. Look out for the roof robert Tiffany Lord. We are gathered here today to rejoice and do the Lord's work for your name and the good works that we do. We asked you first last gone Talbot who is our host and the chairman of uh freedom Memorial Park community. There will be those who say that it is inappropriate to bless the Texan with blessing. Anyway, my father was a member. My brother's a veteran. I am a veteran. More than half of the family demanded by infantry. Are veterans. Do you think the members of cross creek briar wood garden club for remembering us? We ask a special blessing on them on this day when they annually recognize the contributions of the group. Star mothers whose Children and grandchildren served this country in uniform. And then and now I'll call my big city. Please I call on um paul Monroe, send her our national efforts. Oh, okay. Mhm. Please remain standing while parque de will lead us in the pledge of allegiance. Thank you, madam Chair. I'm gonna take a point of personal privilege and say thank you to all the veterans that are here and they aren't here with us and they have served and don thank you for what you do every day, not just on this day to honor our veterans. Mhm. Thank you paul. Before I introduce our speaker. I would like to recognize um jesse Ramirez from the Knights of columbus and they brought a wreath also. So we're doubly blessed. Thank you for coming. Um Where do I start? John Cook john J Cook the third. Um And john jay cook number two is seated over there, a retired lieutenant Colonel, retired colonel also. And the dear mom, Priscilla and Jon has his lovely wife. Get john was born into a military family and he's all military graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as commander of the Corps of cadets. His senior year After graduation in 97, he spent five years on active duty with 82nd here at Fort Bragg. And that's how Snyder I became acquainted with. John Cook john left active duty in july of 84 to attend the southern baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville Kentucky As the Masters of Divinity. He served the church in Kentucky until 89 when he returned to active duty as a chaplain. The next 20 years, 20 plus years. He served as a chaplain to soldiers and their families Including two combat tours, seven months in Saudi Arabia and Iraq for Operation Desert Shield Storm. And I think your last duty was at West Point. And we waited for him about a year to finish that. Uh he retired uh from active duty in the summer of 209 to accept the call for Snyder. And he stayed at Snyder until 2021. His dear wife gay is with him here. Yeah, they have three Children and eight grandchildren, john so happy to have, Oh and by the way, he denied me twice and he said he had engagement and I said, well the year you retire, I will call you in january. Did I? So he's been on the agenda since january, john J there are some people you do not say no to civil rights. I want to thank you publicly for the opportunity to be here. It is an honor to be here with this community in particular to honor our veterans. You know, my love for the military began at a very young age. Like a lot of little boys. My dad was my hero, uh, wanted to grow up and be just like him and dad was a soldier. So I remember dad going off and every day and coming home in that uniform. I remember him in different uniforms for different occasions. I remember going out here to the drop zone in Sicily and watching my dad jump. Uh, it was all about wanting to be like my dad when I grew up, in fact we had a bedroom bedtime routine. Uh, that was unique and special to me. Uh, Dad was here in the 82nd when I was in kindergarten 1st and 2nd grade. And, and when I was probably the only little boy who looked forward to going to bed at night, uh, we would go in the bedroom and dad would have me stretch out horizontal stiff and he would put his hands underneath my back and he would say, what do you want to be? And I say airborne? And he'd say how far and I say all the way and he would remove his hands and dropped me on the mattress of my bed every night. So I was on jump status probably before many people. I remember a different post as I grew a little bit older standing for retreat. We may be driving around the road there at trophy point at West Point when I was in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and you just kind of lose track of time and all of a sudden the flights coming down and the bugle begins to sound retreat and the cars stopped. And I remember my dad getting out of his side and I would get out with him and dad would salute and I would put my hand over my heart as our flag was lowered at the end of the day, I remember playing golf on some military military installations and just out there enjoying the game of golf and all of a sudden in the distance you heard the same bugle call as the flag was being lowered and you drop your clubs and you forget about your game and you can't see the flag but you face the music and you stand at attention, you place your hand over your heart and you honor the flag of the country that we all have served. And so I guess you should say I was destined to be a soviet. And so when it came time to finish up high school I put all my eggs in one basket and I applied to the United States Military Academy at West Point. I wanted to be a soldier. I want to serve my country in uniform like my father and many of his friends have. But what I didn't understand at the time and couldn't understand at the time were several things until I put the uniform on myself and began to serve my country in uniform. And one of those things is the sacrifices, the tremendous sacrifices that our soldiers and sailors and airmen and marines and their families make every day in service to our country. Even in times when you're not at war, just the long and often unpredictable hours. The field exercises, the deployments, the mist special days. We were stationed here at Bragg when Saddam Hussein invaded kuwait in on august 2nd 1990 I was a battalion chaplain for a brand new formed unit, M. L. R. S multiple launch rocket system and I remember him attacking and of course the 82nd Airborne Division was wheels up like they are. They're they're America's guard of honor, They would have been a speed bump but they were there on the ground and and gave my wife asked me a couple of days into that. She said well you have to deploy and I said honey, the whole core would have to deploy before I'm gonna go. We're with the rocket launchers, 29th of august 1990 I was in the sands of Saudi Arabia drinking warm bottled water. I missed thanksgiving christmas for birthday, my birthday valentine's day before it was time to redeploy with my soldiers and come home from the job that that our nation had asked us to do. And so I learned that military service profoundly affects not just the person who wears the uniform but his or her family that stands by his or her side. I've done about 250 funerals over the course of my life, not all of the military, but many of them were. And I noticed in the course of time that there was a distinct difference between the service for the service member and the service for the spouse. The service member has an honor guard and there's the volleys and there's taps and there's a flag fold over the casket and that flag is pulled out horizontal and tight and it's very meticulously folded and presented to the next second, most often the widow. It's a wonderful ceremony to be a part of. In fact the most famous person I buried was General Westmoreland at West Point, all of the pallbearers for general officers, active or retirement. And I said in the course of my military service watching that dichotomy because when the spouses varied, there's none of that. There's nobody in uniform except me as the chaplain and I would submit to you that our spouses and their family members. The service and sacrifice they render to our nation is just as significant as the service and sacrifices that our service members have rendered. I was just last weekend in Asheville north Carolina at the Billy Graham training Center leading a retreat for about 40 gold star wives. First time I've ever done that group, special group of ladies of all ages. I expected that most of them to be younger. There was one woman there I met who was a Vietnam veteran widow and I listened to their stories and I listen to talk about their contribution to the service of our nation. I listen to them talk about how much they miss their loved one who gave his life in service to our nation. I listened to some of them talk about how they have felt stuck over the years and moving forward from what they have sacrificed for our nation. So I had no idea as a young boy, the significance of the service and sacrifices of not only our soldiers, but our family members as well. Another thing I couldn't grasp as as a young person was the camaraderie. There is a special camaraderie among the people who answered the call of service to our nation in uniform. I caught a glimpse of it When I was a child. We would move from military community, the military community. We wouldn't know anybody when we got there, but we were all in the same boat. There were military families from all over the world who were assigned at different posts and we became family for one another, there was a camaraderie there on the, on the basis we served. That was special. I I sensed it as a as a young boy when the mini series came out in 2001 Band of Brothers. It was an immediate hit about easy Company, 101st Airborne Division and their experience in World War Two. And it gave people a chance to see up close and personal. Some of the personal sacrifices uh and what soldiers go through in in times of combat. But as the title says, it talks about the bonds that are that are established and shared among people who shared that combat experience. I experience the same thing in my time in the army I deploy from here in august of 1990 to go to desert shield, desert storm. I ended up with my battalion spending about seven months in Iraq. Uh Saudi Arabia initially waiting months and then Iraq for that 100 our award. And and our soldiers were extremely uh I could not be more proud of what they accomplished. I was a chaplain. I didn't carry any weapons. Uh but I was there to support our soldiers who were doing what their nation had called them to do and we came home and we were we none of us were moving, the army was kind of stuck. Nobody had moved anywhere. Everybody's PCS moves were on hold and while there was a small little window of opportunity I said to my commander and my sergeant major, I said I would like to have a prayer breakfast to kind of come together one more time before we go to the four winds and some of them we would leave the service and I'd like to just get together one more time and thank the Lord for his faithfulness to us and they agreed and and we put the prayer breakfast on it. And normally when a chaplain does a prayer breakfast you might get 10% maybe of your unit to come to that religious event. Sometimes I would offer it during P. T. So the soldier for you to go to P. T. Or free breakfast and I would get a little bit more. But on this particular occasion we just put it out there. Hey look we're gonna get together one more time together. And over 90% of my soldiers came because of the bonds that we had established on the battlefield of Iraq and Saudi reading. I'll never forget that time together with them. And so I couldn't appreciate at the time the real camaraderie that is a part of serving your nation, our nation in uniform. And finally I couldn't understand as a young boy the fulfillment the tremendous fulfillment that comes from putting the uniform and every day and answering the call to military service to our country. You know, we only get one shot at life and I enjoy meeting people and and talking to people about how in the world they got into what they do. People do things I never even knew existed and it's just neat to see how the Lord leads people to do different things in life. As I look back at age 65 on my life. And as I stood at my retirement ceremony at the cadet chapel at West Point in the summer of 2009, my twin sons were finished their junior year at West Point. They were gonna be following in my footsteps in another year and I said from the bottom of my heart, the whole command team was there many of the friends we had established at West Point where there are many of the people that I administered to were there uh and I said to them from the bottom of my heart, if I could live my life all over again I'd do the same thing, I'll do the same thing. I miss all those special days. I move all around the world. I dragged my kids through different schools, sometimes moving the middle of the year. I do it all again for the privilege and the fulfillment that has been mine to serve my country and in my case my God at the same time and I know many of you, many of you feel the same way. And so we have to be gathered today to honor our veterans. May God bless you and your families for your service to our country. And the sacrifices you have made along the way in the course of that service. And may God bless the men and women who are serving today. Some of us at the tip of the sphere and their families for the service they continue to render. And the sacrifices they continue to make for our great country and may God bless our great nation that we all love and call home. I wouldn't be a citizen of any other country. God bless you. God bless our veterans. Thank you for being here today. Thank you. Thank you. That came from the heart for sure. Um I would like to recognize the fact that our flowers.
