DURHAM, N.C. — Mixed news on Thursday from Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews, who presented the city's latest crime report to city leaders.

The chief pointed out that homicide and rape cases were up more than 8 and 16 percent, respectively, in the Durham Police Department's 2023 4th quarter report.

"While shootings were up, the number of actual people shot decreased by more than 13 percent," said Andrews.

Andrews said it's significant that nearly 80 percent of the shooting reports to police were initiated by ShotSpotter technology.

"I do want to just publicly commend my entire team on their work this year on probably one of the most groundbreaking pilots for this technology," Andrews said.

Robbery and aggravated assault incidents were down in the 4th quarter--and the overall violent crime total dropped by nearly 4 percent.

Property crime was up quite a bit--with vehicle thefts spiking more than 134 percent over the previous quarter.
