2 people killed in head-on collision on US-421 in Sampson County

Two people have died in a head-on collision involving a dump truck and a passenger car on U.S. 421 near Clinton, the State Highway Patrol said.

CLINTON, N.C. — Two people died Monday in a head-on collision involving a dump truck, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Sky 5 flew over the scene on Monday afternoon on U.S. 421 just north of New Bethel Road near Clinton.

Troopers said the accident happened just after 2 p.m. when a Nissan passenger car driving southbound on U.S. 421 crossed the center lane and collided with a dump truck traveling northbound.

Authorities confirmed two people in the Nissan, later identified as 54-year-old Kenneth Evans and 74-year-old Mary Elizabeth Thompson died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the dump truck was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
