MEBANE, N.C. — A father and daughter were killed when a fire broke out Sunday night at their mobile home in Orange County, authorities said.

The fire was reported by a neighbor about 8:15 p.m. at a home around the 6200 block of N.C. Highway 70 West.

Sky 5 video showed heavy damage to the home's interior and exterior and scorched furniture inside.

Mebane Fire Chief Bob Lewis said 55-year-old William Alan Gourley and his daughter, 30-year-old Betsy Gourley, died in the fire. Their bodies were located in the front bedroom, he said.

According to Lewis, Betsy Gourley was disabled and bedridden. A family member said the father was trying to rescue her after the fire started on the front porch.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but foul play was not expected.
