For Black History Month, WRAL News is launching a series of TV stories, web articles, live streams and even podcasts airing every Monday and Friday in February. Take a look at the incredible stories of North Carolina's Black History we plan to cover this month.
Every Friday in February, we'll highlight modern day leaders and change makers in the Black community who are working to implement change.
WRAL News will be able to air never-before-seen video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speaking at Reynolds Coliseum in July 1966 and hear memories from someone who was there that day. We'll delve into the rich history of hip hop in North Carolina and talk to the local music pioneers who helped it grow. Look for stories about the rebuilding of a historic Black church – and desegregation efforts at UNC and in Durham schools.
Tune in to explore the history of communities of Freedom Seekers who lived in the state's biggest swamp, to visit a Quaker community that helped people escape slavery, and even visit an 1800s jail that held people caught trying to escape down a Freedom Road in Halifax.
WRAL is committed to covering stories of racial disparities and and amplifying voices and efforts for change.
