17-year-old charged with murder in death of high school student

Tuesday at 10:58 p.m., Robeson County deputies responded to Downy Road in Rowland in reference to an individual who was shot. When deputies arrived, they found Kaden Strickland, 17, of Pembroke, dead.

ROWLAND, N.C. — A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and possession of firearm by a minor in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old high school student.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 17-year-old Kaden Strickland, a student at Purnell Swett High School, who was shot and killed on Tuesday.

At 10:58 p.m., Robeson County deputies responded to Downy Road in Rowland in reference to an individual who was shot. When deputies arrived, they found Strickland, who was dead at the scene.

Public Schools of Robeson County sent a statement to WRAL News:

"We ask the community to join us in prayer for the family of Purnell Swett High School student Kaden Strickland who passed away recently. We are deeply saddened for the Strickland family. Please also keep students and staff members in your prayers as they navigate this difficult time of loss."

The 17-year-old charged in connection with the murder is being held in the Cumberland Regional Juvenile Detention Center without bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
