MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A teenager was killed after being hit by a car early Sunday in Horry County.

Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said 15-year-old Austin Barnard was struck by a vehicle while walking in the area of 3055 Highway 17 Business at around 5:30 a.m.

An autopsy will be conducted later in the week.

WMBF News was at the site of the crash Sunday evening, where a memorial had been placed by those gathering for a vigil.

“I don’t think they will be good for a long time,” said Tara Young, whose daughter was a friend of Barnard’s. “I just hope they all come to find peace in the situation and just come to finally come to terms and understand why this happened.”

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
