DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham family is mourning the loss of a 19-year-old man who was killed in a drive-by shooting Saturday night.

Kenneth Mitchell III was shot in the head while riding in a car with his girlfriend and her sister at the Lynn Haven Apartments, according to his aunt, Latoniya Ellison.

"They drove off trying to get away from the shooting and they ended up stopping," she said.

Authorities found Mitchell in the back of a car on U.S. 70, near Miami Boulevard. The women called for help, but by the time officers arrived, Mitchell had died.

"I feel like I lost my joy," Ellison told WRAL News. "I just can't think of anybody that would purposefully be after him or want to hurt him in that way."

Ellison thinks her nephew may have been accidentally targeted. A man who loved to sing and dance, she said she will remember him as an easygoing guy who loved to smile.

"His smile...that will be the thing we miss the most," she said.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Durham police at 919-560-4440.
