APEX, N.C. — An Apex police K-9 finishing its first full week on the job helped authorities locate a missing woman Friday night after she walked away from her home.

Authorities said they received a call late Friday about a woman who walked away from her apartment on Lake Pine Drive north of U.S. Highway 64. GPS helped locate the woman's cellphone, which was in a heavily-wooded area nearby.

With the help of Rocky, a 2-year-old Malinois, authorities located the woman, who was barely conscious, at the bottom of an embankment. Officers helped pull the woman free of thorns and bushes before she was treated by emergency crews.

The woman had been drinking, authorities said, but she was taken to a local hospital and expected to be OK. Her name was not released.

Rocky came to the Apex Police Department after completing his training with Office Scott James. Sworn in early this month, Rocky is the only police dog working in the Peak City.

Rocky, bred in Iowa, is a passive-find dog trained in drugs, narcotics and tracking, authorities said.
