Duke Raleigh Hospital CEO knows health care doesn't take a day off
Duke Raleigh CEO David Zaas was checking on patients Thanksgiving night, not a typical task for a manager.

The difference on Thanksgiving night was that the doctor making rounds is also the chief operating officer of the hospital.
“I love the act of taking care of patients and what we can do,” Dr. David Zaas said. “As the CEO, I feel like I learn something that I can make better every time I come in.”
Zaas has been practicing medicine for 18 years and has served for nearly five months as CEO of Duke Raleigh, where there’s no holiday from the work of providing health care.
“I think it helps me as an administrator and a leader,” he said.
Kelly Werner has battled breast cancer for 18 months. Needles are IVs were her menu on Thanksgiving. Through all of it, she said she felt pretty good and thankful for her care - and impressed it came from the top.
