RALEIGH, N.C. — Hot temperatures will linger across central and eastern North Carolina on the first day of the work week, but big changes are coming behind a cold front that will move through the region Monday, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

"We're on the cusp of another long stretch of below-normal temperatures," she said. "We'll start to feel some of those changes during the afternoon and evening, and cooler, drier air will really pour into the area overnight and into Tuesday morning."

Before the less humid air mass arrives, Monday's passing front could generate an afternoon shower or storm along and east of the Interstate 95 corridor.

The Triangle and points west should stay dry as temperatures climb into the low 90s.

"We probably won't end up with much of anything in terms of rain in the Triangle, but we can't rule it out in our eastern counties," Gardner said.

By mid-afternoon, noticeably drier air will begin moving in, and dew points will dip sharply by Monday evening.

Temperatures will dip into the low 60s overnight, setting up a six-or seven-day stretch of below-normal highs and lows.

Daytime temperatures will reach only the mid-80s through the weekend, and overnight lows will hover in the low-to mid-60s throughout the week.

"It's going to be crisp Tuesday morning thanks to our lower dew points," Gardner said. "We'll get to enjoy another long stretch of cooler highs, which is very out of the ordinary for this time of year."

Rain chances will return for the weekend, but the bulk of the week will be dry.
