Two people, Richard Yarborough and David Matthews, were shot. Yarborough died from his injuries and Matthews is at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Deputies learned shots were being fired during a 911 call. Gunfire was still being fired when deputies arrived.

The circumstances around what led to the shooting are not yet known. The home was destroyed.

Investigators said the shooting suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Mattias Matthew Bagby, ran into the woods and was found near Interstate 95 and taken into custody.

"Deputies ended up finding a location on him," said Cumberland County Sheriff's spokesperson Mickey Locklear. "They had to chase him through the woods. They did apprehend him he did have a weapon on him at the time."

Authorities charged Bagby with the following:

  • First-degree murder
  • First-degree attempted murder
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
  • Two counts of shooting into occupied dwelling
  • Breaking and entering with intent to terrorize
Bagby, 45, was charged with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder for a shooting that killed one man, injured another and ended with a home burned to the ground.

Authorities processed Bagby at the Cumberland County Detention Center and denied him bond.

Deputies said the community is not under any threat. The surrounding area was closed to traffic while authorities investigated.

Investigators are still trying to understand a motive for the shooting and what led to the fire.

Bagby will make his first court appearance on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
