Following a prank that left many fleeing the event last year, the Town of Knightdale has announced that it will celebrate the Fourth of July this year without fireworks.

Town officials announced via social media plans to have a family-friendly celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Knightdale Station Park on July 4.

The event will include a bike parade, live music, food trucks, inflatables and giveaways. There will also be a DJ performing at the splashpad, which will be open to help people cool off.

During last year's celebration, authorities told WRAL News that someone lit a fountain firework in the middle of the crowd, near the food trucks, while the fireworks show was going on. Many people thought that sound was gunfire, which caused mass panic and led to groups of people to take off running. No one was injured.

"This event isn't just about celebration; it's about coming together as a community, fostering connections, and creating lasting bonds," town officials wrote. "While we understand the absence of fireworks may be disappointing, your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities, and we're committed to providing a day that reflects the vibrant spirit of our town."
