Man shot by deputy in Person County was waving gun at passing cars, officials say

A man was shot and killed by a Person County deputy Sunday night in a rural area near Rougemont.

Around 6:04 p.m., deputies responded to the intersection of Mt. Harmony Church Road and Cousin Road in response to a car in a ditch and reports of a man walking in the road waving a firearm at cars driving by.

Deputies said they commanded Kelvin Markeith Moseley, 30, to drop the weapon and raise his hands.

However, they said he refused to comply and instead fired two rounds.

Authorities said Moseley then moved toward the deputies, while ignoring their commands. Deputy Johnny Clark fired his gun, hitting Moseley. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) said the man died.

Clark has been placed on leave. Authorities confirmed that the deputies had body cameras and in-car camera footage.

The SBI is investigating.
