On Thursday morning, North Mecklenburg's athletic department announced that it has promoted Daryl Vereen to its head football coach position. Vereen is taking over for Damon McKee, who the school parted ways with in early April.

Vereen is a North Meck alum and has been on the staff as an assistant for the past few seasons. Before this promotion, Vereen was the Vikings' defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

A class of 2007 graduate, Vereen was a multi-sport standout for the Vikings. He was a four-year varsity player in football and basketball, as well as a track standout. As a basketball player, Vereen started on a state championship team and a state runner-up team. During his senior football season, Vereen rushed for 2,603 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Vereen went on to play linebacker at the University of Tennessee.

During McKee's four-season tenure, the Vikings finished with an 18-20 overall record and made the playoffs twice. North Mecklenburg competes in the Queen City 3A/4A Conference with Chambers, Hopewell, Hough, Mallard Creek, West Charlotte, West Mecklenburg, and Harding University.

The Vikings' best season as a football program came in 1992 when they reached the 4A West regional final. That squad team fell to East Forsyth in a 22-0 game.
