Former Chambers High School state champion football coach Glenwood Ferebee is returning to Mecklenburg County to be the head coach at Butler High School in Matthews.

Ferebee announced to his X account on Friday that his hiring is official.

The coach is taking over for Brian Hales, who stepped down after 13 seasons leading the program. Hales led Butler to a 132-35 overall record and a 4AA state championship victory over Jack Britt in 2012. The Bulldogs had eight seasons of double digit wins and won nine total conference championships under Hales.

Ferebee took over Chambers in 2019 after the program was jumpstarted by Aaron Brand. Chambers broke through for its first state championship in Ferebee's first year with a 24-3 win over Leesville Road in the 4AA state championship.

Chambers won its second consecutive 4AA state championship under Ferebee during the 2020-2021 season that was played in the spring as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Chambers defeated Rolesville by a score of 35-14. Ferebee's Cougars played in the highest state championship, the 4A title, once again in the following year. That time, the Cougars lost to Cardinal Gibbons in a 14-2 game.

Overall, Chambers had a win-loss record of 34-8.

Ferebee left Chambers after the 2021 4A state championship game. He became the director of high school relations for Virginia Tech's football program. This year, Ferebee accepted the head coaching position at Wilson High School in South Carolina. He resigned after a few months on the job when he got the news that he was picked for the Butler job.
