Cumberland County residents are being warned about a phone scam that's circulating.

The sheriff's office said people are receiving phone calls from callers impersonating law enforcement officers or Cumberland County Court staff members. The caller is informing the resident that a bench or arrest warrant has been issued for failure to appear for jury duty. The caller is instructing people to pay large amounts of money by telephone, Western Union or prepaid gift cards. Sometimes, the caller is telling people that failing to pay this fine will result in a jail sentence.

The sheriff's office said someone was scammed Tuesday for $3,500 by depositing money into a Coinstar machine at a grocery store to pay the scammer.

Remember, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office will never contact you by phone or email to request money, credit card information or sensitive personal and financial details (social security or credit card numbers). The sheriff's office will never ask for electronic money transfers. If you receive any such communication, it's a scam. Report it immediately.
